I came across Magical Spelling® whilst looking for alternative approaches to spelling for my dyslexic daughter. What appealed to both of us was the no nonsense approach that is quick to learn and more importantly, my daughter can now use the method whenever she wants without any input from me. She first began to use it for learning new words in English and now uses it for chemical formula in science and remembering phone numbers. I undertook the training to become a Magical Spelling Tutor in 2015 and became an approved tutor in early 2016, as it compliments the work I do in wellbeing.
Magical Spelling® is built upon a strategy researched by Robert Dilts a neurolingistic programmer (NLP). He found a group of naturally good spellers and asked detailed questions about what was happening internally when they spelled well. He noticed consistent patterns among the internal experiences of the good spellers. He then talked to some no-spellers and found that they were doing things differently. When he taught them to use the natural speller’s processes instead they became good spellers.
Having read about Dilt’s work, Cricket Kemp a teacher and NLP practitioner, began teaching it to many poor spellers, starting with her own dyslexic children. Together with colleagues Caitlin Walker and Nancy Doyle, she developed techniques which made it easier and easier to learn this natural spelling strategy. Eventually this teaching process became Magical Spelling® and has now been learnt by 10,000’s of people across the world since the late 1990’s.
